The Satio is the new flagship smart phone by Sony Ericsson. It features a 12 MP (4000 x 3000 pixels) camera and new touch screen interface using Symbian OS (Series 60, 5th edition). It also includes a GPS reciever, 3g data speeds and all the usual featured expeceted from Sony Ericsson.

Key Features

OS – Symbian Series 60, 5th edition

Display – Touch screen 3.5 inch TFT screen with 16 million colours

Wifi – 802.11 b/g

Memory – MicroSD, up to 32 gb (8gb card included)
Camera

Sony Ericsson handsets are renowned for their camera quality and the Satio is no exception. This 12 MP camera phone produces the best quality pictures I have seen from any phone on the market today. Camera phones generally struggle to complete with stand alone compact cameras due to sensor size. The sensor in the Satio has a surface area of 27 mm^2 compared with a similarly priced camera (£300-£400) such as a Nikon Coolpix P6000 which has sensor surface area of 41.1mm^2, over 150% larger. The Satios camera does not perform well under low light conditions, especially for shots of moving subjects. For everyday pictures the Satio performs adequately but you will be disappointed if you are expecting similar results to a genuine camera.

Interface

The interface is based on Symbian S60, aslo used in Nokias newer smart phones such as the N97 and N86. Altho this is a fantastic and very capable opertation system, the Satio uses a 600mghz processor which is vastly underpowered. Our expectations of high end phones have increased since the release of the Iphone from Apple and other products from Samsung and LG (Samsung Jet, LG Arean e.t.c.). The handset includes many advanced features such as a modern internet browser, GPS reciever and of course the 12MP and these work brilliantly. It’s just a shame that the overall experience using the handset is slightly marred by the clunky interface.

Build Quality

We had high hopes for the Satios build quality. Sony laptops, tv’s and games consoles boast some of the finest build quality available in their respective feilds. In recent times Sony Ericsson handsets have suffered high return rates and poor overall quality, particularly with the C905, C902 and K850. We expect more from Sony and the Satio sees them making big improvements in this area. Unfortunately, in practice the Satios build quality is reallly rather poor. The handset feels plasticy and unresponsive. Again, compared with similar products on the market it seems Sony still have a long way to go to catch up with the likes of Apple and Samsung.

Summary

The Satio by Sony Ericsson is a very capable smart phone. It features the best camera available on any phone today and all the latest functions such as a GPS reciever, full multimedia capability and a good internert browser. The problems with the handset are it’s competitors such as the Apple Iphone, Samsung Jet and LG Arena. These handsets have raised the expectations of customers and the Satio looks weak when compared. If your a Sony Ericsson fan, you will like the Satio. It is a reliable, fully featured handset and it looks good. Just be sure to check out alternatives before you make your decision.
