Cleaning a spill on your Keyboard
If you spill coffee, or any other beverage for that matter, on your computer keyboard, all may not be lost. Follow these simple instructions to clean a spill from your keyboard, and you may just be able to salvage it and not need to buy a new one
- As soon as you spill the liquid on the keyboard, flip it over to try to drain as much of the liquid as is possible from the keyboard.
- Make sure that you have access to a picture of a standard keyboard, or another actual physical keyboard. We’re going to be plucking keys off the wet keyboard here, and you’re going to want to know where to put them back!
- Using a knife, gently pluck the keys off the keyboard. Try to only remove the keys that you absolutely have to (ie avoid removing keys from areas on the keyboard that didn’t get wet).
- Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe gently away any moisture on the keyboard base. If you spilled something sticky on the keyboard, use a damp cloth with household cleaner to wipe down the keyboard.
- If the keys which you removed from the keyboard are sticky, soak them in warm, soapy water. Allow the keys to dry completely before replacing them.
- Ensure that everything is completely dry before you begin to reassemble the keyboard. You can use compressed air or a hair dryer to make sure everything’s completely dry.
- The keys should snap back into position with gently applied pressure. Make sure when replacing the keys, that you put them in the right position. Use the picture or other keyboard from step one to do this.
